Folk, Americana, pop.

Norwegian singer, cellist, and songwriter Paulin Voss has been making music for quite some time and recently released her sixth album, PEOPLE LIKE US. And, as always, it sounds absolutely stunning. It captures the best of the Americana genre and layers it with Nordic influences. What you get is an audio experience built on a unique foundation.

DREAMS starts the album and feels incredibly calming, with slow-moving chords that are later accompanied by warm cello. The vocals instantly soothe the mind. JILLS VERANDA, which features Hannah Veronica, follows and gives space to the acoustic guitar. Things sound a bit more upbeat here, especially towards the end. ROAD SONG returns to the vibe of the opener, prioritizing storytelling once again.

The title track features fantastic vocal layering and delivers sincere messages. You immediately get the sense that you understand life a little better after hearing the lyrics. FIRST FLIGHT is another steady ballad. Perhaps minimal, but it does the trick. SOMEONE LIKE YOU has, in my opinion, the best melody on the project. Very fascinating, for sure. HARVEST MOON embraces atmospheric, almost experimental production. It’s inventive.

LONG RIDE and OUR SONG complement each other beautifully and keep you engaged, encouraging you to continue listening. WALK INTO THE WILD makes you believe you’re standing in front of a western-themed set because of its instrumentation and lyrics. BUTTERFLIES & BEES is genuinely lovely to listen to, with some very memorable moments, like the chorus. CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE, featuring Hannah Veronica, makes the perfect closer considering its sentimental undertone.

Voss constructed a brilliant album by following the right steps. PEOPLE LIKE US celebrates creativity on a variety of levels. Furthermore, it shows that Voss is still developing artistically, making her an iconic figure.
